"A talented composer.”
– Ira Newborn, Film Composer; Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Blues Brothers, Naked Gun “Zac is amazing. He engineered a track beautifully that 5 other engineers couldn’t resolve. So nice to work with someone who finally gets it!" – SiSSi Neyunmeyer, International Recording Artist “There aren’t a lot of composers like Zac out there. His synthesis is coherent - it makes sense. He cares about getting better and works at it. He does the heavy lifting.” – Samn Johnson, composer, New York University |
Zac Lavender is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist whose body of work spans from avant-garde chamber music, to opera, to film scores, to pop. His music has been described as unique blend of alternative rock, modern jazz, and classical.
An Atlanta native, Lavender was exposed to diverse musical styles, playing principal cello with the LSO, singing with Atlanta Young Singers, while also performing Jazz and pop music around the city. His compositions first sprouted during his freshman year at North Springs Performing Arts High School in Atlanta. He went on to win both statewide Reflections and the ASTA Merle J. Isaac award for his piece, “Monadnock: based on a poem by Emerson.” Since entering college, Zac has also performed with the University of Michigan Philharmonia, University Choir, Creative Arts Orchestra, and NYU Composers Ensemble.
Zac earned his Bachelor of Music composition at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance — graduating with honors. During his tenure at Michigan, Zac was heavily involved with several school organizations and attended both the Fresh Inc. and Wintergreen festivals as a composer-in-residence. Lavender has written touring works for Latitude 49, Moanin' Frogs and has had works performed at Curtis, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Yale School of Music, University of Michigan, and New York University. He also premiered his orchestral work, “Battery” with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, composed several film festival scores, as well as co-produced and composed the music to “Shattering the Mirror: a Fairy Tale Song Cycle.” He has studied composition under Michael Daugherty, Bright Sheng, Paul Schoenfield, and film scoring under Ira Newborn.
Zac moved to New York in the fall of 2014, where he participated in the Society of Composers and Lyricists in New York Mentorship Program, learning from some of New York’s busiest industry professionals while also tutoring at P.S. 309 in Brooklyn. He has also interned as a music journalist for Zumic Music News before graduating from New York University's Steinhardt School with a Masters in Film scoring. During his tenure at NYU, he was a Billy Joel scholarship recipient.
Since finishing his degree at NYU, Zac has moved back to Atlanta to corner the budding film scoring market. He has worked with post-production companies such as Magic Lantern and High Profile Group, LLC, to score content for events, corporate videos, independent films and web series as well as television. He frequently plays bass and sings with D-Town Lavender and teaches music lessons at Music By Tritone and Bach2Rock Alpharetta while continuing to produce and record for clients in New York and Los Angeles.
